I'm trying to plan a trip to Italy in the fall. We are wondering about going to San Marino on our way to Venice from Rome. Is it worth the stop?
Would you be driving or going via public transportation? Hope this helps.. http://www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/helpline/index.cfm/rurl/topic/65294/san-marino.html
I like SM myself, some don't. After seeing Rome it'll probably not seem like a whole lot. The views are great on a clear day but in the fall it'll be a crap shoot for that.
We will be driving. When we travel we like to have a variety of sights between the big cities and the smaller, quieter villages. The pictures of San Marino look great but you can never really tell from pictures.
Stefanie San Marino was my least favorite hill town. Too commercial and somewhat tacky. I would check out RS Italy 2011 to see what catches your eye. Assisi was a favorite. Big enough to be a real town but small enough to have character! St. Francis Basilica is outstanding with more light and bright paintings than anywhere in Italy. Have fun researching your small town Italy spot!
