San Marino

I'm putting together our itinerary for 2026 Italian trip. We have been to the major areas, and some of the lesser knows areas in the north. Has anyone been to San Marino? Is it worth going to? If so, how long would you stay there?

We enjoyed an afternoon, just spending a bit of time to visit and enjoy the stunning views of and from the Fortress of Guaita and munch a piadina. San Marino was a stop en route to Ravenna. If you’ll have a car, it’s certainly worth a stop.

San Marino is a sort of curio, as it is an indipendent state, probably the most ancient republic still in existence, more than a thousand years old. But, as a big difference from mainland Italy, Sanmarinians never had a real knack for arts, just for maintaing their indipendence, so there aren't big sights or museums to visit (maybe some visitors could be relieved). You can see almost everything in a couple hours.

I wouldn’t go out of my way to see San Marino, but if you happen to be in the area in a car why not? Make sure you also visit the town of San Leo, and the Gradara Castle, all nearby. A car is almost a must for all of that, but if you rent one, you can probably visit all of the above in a day.
