san marco basilica closed?

Is the basilica closed for renovations or construction? I can't seem to book a reservation time on the site www.alata.it.
Would anyone know what's happening down there?
Thanks!

Several weeks ago, I tried booking for July, and no dates were available at all. Then, April dates were posted, but nothing past that. I received an e-mail from the website venetoinside.com, and they told me that the May and future dates would be available on April 20th. So, hopefully, tomorrow, they'll be available. But, honestly, I'm holding my breath!

You don't need a reservation for St. Mark's. Just get in line. If you check a bag around the corner to the left, they'll give you a pass that lets you skip the line.

We were just there and it was open, but I don't know about this summer.

Hi

When we went, we just got in line and got in. BUT - we were turned away at first because we were wearing shorts. So, wear long pants!

I'm glad Paula mentioned this -- her experience should settle the constant questions about whether to wear shorts or not. If you plan to go into any churches, do not wear them. I too have gotten into San Marco later in the day, when the line was short, but I can imagine the frustration and inconvenience of being turned away. What a hassle.

As has been mentioned previously on this site wear either pants or a longer skirt and cover your shoulders - no singlet tops etc. to enter churches.

We were there in March--didn't need tickets. The line seemed very long for most of the day. However, when we looked at 3:00pm, there was no one! Seems to be shorter once cruise ships and day visitors leave.

Yes. The official website links you to alata.it, which links you to venetoinside.com. Thanks, though.

Well, April 20th came and went, and the post-April dates are still not available on-line. I e-mailed the website, and they're now saying that the post-April dates will be available on May 1st.

That's interesting, because it stays at Basilica San Marco for me.

I was just at San Marco on May 7 and it was very much open. They don't joke about the dress code though. We saw them turn someone away for wearing an Iron Maiden t-shirt.

If you don't get a reservation just go in the afternoon. We arrived at San Marco at 13:30 after eating our lunch and walked right up to the door. We went back a few mornings later to take pictures of the square in the morning light and the line was unbelieveable.
