On Friday October 25 I will need to travel by public transport from San Gimignano to Lucca, hopefully starting out mid- to late-morning. It appears that this will involve a mix of bus and train, but I am having trouble finding specifics. Does anyone know the routes and approximate times involved, and is there more than one viable way to choose between? Molte Grazie!
Train: Lucca to Poggibonsi (2 hours with train change, 9€) http://www.trenitalia.com Bus: Poggibonsi to San Gimignano (25 min, 2.5€ )
http://www.busfox.com/timetable/ But I would not recommend this as a day trip. It takes 3 hours each way.
Thanks Sean. Actually I am going the other way, San Gimignano to Lucca. The times and web sites you list are still helpful though. This is not a day trip, I will be staying in both towns. I had heard that another alternative is to go via Firenze, but am unsure whether one route is shorter or better than the other.
It's the same the other way round 1-Bus from San Gimignano to Poggibonsi
2-Train from Poggibonsi to Lucca (with a change in Florence or Pisa)
Sean has the best and fastest way. It avoids Florence. However, as an alternative that includes Florence, simply take the SITA bus from San G. to Florence (which probably stops in Poggibonsi), walk about 5-8 minutes to the Florence SMN train station and take the train to Lucca.
