San Gimignano Home Base and 1/2 Day Trips

We want to have a slower paced Italy experience - meaning we don't want to run from one city to the next to see it all. We will not be renting a car, as we are not comfortable doing that. Is it doable to stay in San Gimignano for 3 nights and explore outside the town a bit using public transportation? Any tips on how to do that and where to go?

This will be a challenge, much easier by car.
By public transport, it will take some effort but you should research the bus websites to see if you can find detailed schedules. And of course you need to decide where you want to go. And remember that the bus schedules on Sunday are much more limited than during the week. Siena would be closest but don't try from SG to Siena by bus on Sunday.

From my experience, San Gimignano is difficult if you're relying on public transportation. I imagine it can be done though. I've been there twice on day trips, and it's fabulous, but a friend stayed for a few days on a romantic trip and she said it was amazing after all the day tourists left and they had it to themselves in the evening.
