I am trying to decide on San Gimi or Siena as a Tuscan base for three nights. I will not have a car so I assume Siena is better and there is more to do/easier to get to other towns, etc. But San Gimi has nice lodging for cheaper. Is San Gimi a good option for not having a car (we will be taking bus from Florence)? Thanks
Is it easy to rent a car in Siena? Or would I have to rent it in Florence? I am planning on going through Florence of course to get to Siena, but then heading to Pisa/CT afterwards. Thanks!
Without a car you should stay in Florence or Siena. However renting a car would be the best idea so that you can visit a lot of places in that area (San Gimignano, Volterra, Monteriggioni, Chianti, Val D'Orcia, etc.). Without a car you are going to be dependent on infrequent bus service to the smaller towns and countryside.
We had no problem renting a car in Siena and then enjoying the small towns in Tuscany on our way down to Rome. I would definitely stay in Siena as San Gimangano is much smaller and you will find more to do in the evening in Siena.
Great to know. Thanks!
Visit Florence - No Car needed Go to Siena by bus and visit Siena - No car needed.
At the end of Siena visit rent a car for a couple of days and visit small towns such as San Gimignano, Monteriggioni, Colle V.E., Certaldo, Chianti hills, etc. Leave a visit at Volterra for last. From Volterra (in the Province of Pisa) proceed to Pisa. In Pisa you could return the car (at the airport), visit the city for a couple of hours, then take the train to the CT. Or you could just park your car in Pisa at the parking lot on Via Cammeo, just for the time necessary to visit Piazza dei Miracoli (2hr max), then get back on the car and proceed north to La Spezia where you return the car. From La Spezia take the train to CT, just few minutes' ride.
Thanks Roberto!
We have used Siena as a base and then taken public busses to see the surrounding hill towns. You are a bit at the mercy of the bus schedules but it's easily done as long as you pay attention to the times the last bus leaves to head back to Siena. If you stay in San Gimignano you will need to connect to other busses through Siena to get to other hill towns in that area which I wouldn't recommend as it would eat up time. Siena is such an amazing city to be in at night...the main square comes alive and there is so much to see after dark when everyone is out and about after the heat of the day. Enjoy!
Thanks Anita. So i am assuming it ismeasy to take the regional bus from Siena to other places. This is good to know.
