San Gigmanano on a Sunday

Anyone been to SG in September on a "Sunday" ?? That's about the only day we have. Just going for the afternoon/evening / dinner. No car and think the busses only run until around 6 pm, so no idea how we will get back. Cross that bridge when we come to it :) Just wanting to know if anyone has been there on a Sunday and if restaurants are open. Thanks much ! dianne

Lots of Italians go there on a Sunday. It's a popular Sunday getaway for families who live in Tuscany, therefore if the weather is nice it will be packed. Restaurants will be open and full. I still remember a long wait for a table at a restaurant in San Gimignano with my parents and friends when I was about 12 years old. We finally gave up and settled for a restaurant in Poggibonsi, it was that bad. I've only used a car to get there but in the worst scenario try to find a way to get to nearby Poggibonsi (by city bus or taxi). That's the main town there and the Siena-Florence train line passes through it. Go to the station (which is called Poggibonsi-San Gimignano) and catch a train to Florence. Trains on that line generally run later than buses, even on Sundays. Last one to Florence departs Poggibonsi at 9:49 pm in fact.
