San Clemente Church in Rome-what are the steps like to the lower levels?

The layers of churches seems really interesting, but are the steps to the lower levels steep? dark? narrow? lots of them? Thanks for your info.

Yes, the stairs are dark and narrow but not steep. Easy to negotiate. Just be careful. Amazing place, you will be glad you saw it!
And not that many flights down, maybe three, I think.

Thanks Judy. Are there handrails?

Stairs are adequately lit.

Had worse ( i.e. more challenging) stairs in some hotels in Italy.

Definitely worth going.

I don't recall whether there were handrails but I would expect there were. You can ask at the ticket office before going in. Or inquire via "contacts" on the website (you might want to use Google Translate for this if you don't know Italian). The stairs are not steep although some of the corridors on the lowest level are narrow and twisty. San Clemente was one of the high points of my week in Rome last year.

Thanks to everyone who replied. The steps were easy and had handrails and this is one of my favorite churches in Rome(and I've been to 5). The gold mosaics were stunning. This sight is underrated.
