San Candido as an alternative to Cortina?

We are spending some time in Ortesei and then headed to the Cortina area for a bit to check out Tre Cime among other things. We only have 2 nights and are booking kind of last minute for next month.

I've noticed that this last minute the hotels left in Cortina are pretty mediocre. However up the road in San Candido there are some nice places still available at pretty good rates.

I don't hear San Candido talked about that much, everyone just seems to assume Cortina is the place to stay. Is San Candido a good alternative or should I opt for a more middle of the road place in Cortina?

We will have a car.

Yes, I would look at staying in San Candido or Toblach. They are minutes apart from one another and are a great base for exploring the area. Both towns are less commercialized than Cortina. Furthermore, Cortina has lot of construction taking place right for the 2026 Olympics so the town views may be dotted with construction cranes.

Mahler spent some holidays in nearby Dobbiaco/Tobleach and my family got to get a prize from Villabassa/Niederdorf for spending holidays there for more than 15 years. Cortina is much more upscale than San Candido or Dobbiaco, but hotels are probably better value for money in the two northern localities. Both are easily reachable by frequent train service. If you have a car, there are a lot of scenic hikes that can be reached with 30 minutes driving from San Candido or Dobbiaco (including the Cortina area); but if you are on public transportation, both are a little off the main peaks - places like Ortisei, Canazei, Vigo di Fassa are closer to scenic hikes without driving.
