Hi akaangelceci2 -
The best thing for you to do is to get yourself a good guidebook and start making notes on things you read about that you'd like to see/do. We all make different itineraries based on our individual interests so you should make yours based on your own. Besides, learning how to put one together from pre-research is all part of the fine art of travel! :O)

Make note of what is open and what is closed on any given day, and leave some time open for unscheduled exploration. Other than attractions for which pre-purchased tickets/reserved time slots are mandatory for skipping long lines, flexibility to sightsee according to weather is a nice thing to have.

First thing Monday morning, go to almost any tabacchi shop and get a weekly bus/Metro pass, 24 Euro/pp. Also ask for the receipt and keep it on your person in case you're asked to show verification because you'll only have to validate the pass first time on a bus, then you're home free for the week, with the ability to enter from the front or side entrances. Then first time at Termini, there's a kiosk just inside the door that sells laminated transit maps, which you'll need because the routes and logistics are labyrinthine at best. Get one of those.

From there, you can explore the city without having to worry how you're going to get there.

As Kathy said, we each have our own ideas of what makes up a good itinerary. I hope you have Rick Steves' guide to Rome so you know the ins-and-outs of various sites. There is no substitute for a good guidebook.

He also has some Rome itinerary recommendations of various lengths here.

Yes definitely get Rick's Italy guidebook to cover your itinerary, but there are also separate guidebooks for Rome, Venice and for Florence/ Tuscany if you want more detailed coverage.
