Salerno-Train to Rome

I have been on the Trenitalia site for about an hour and it will not take Salerno-Rome as a viable option for the fast train.
I used the date of June 23 of this year to get an idea of timing and pricing.
This is alternative to taking the bus from Positano to Sorrento then the train to Naples-Rome
We would take the ferry from Positano to Salerno then the fast train straight to Rome. I understand that this can be done.
Am I missing something?
Any help would be appreciated.

Are you putting in Roma Termini for the end destination? Are you setting the earliest time you might want to go, as well as the date? When I did those things, it turned up a fast train at 8:01 a.m. and another at 3:57 p.m. (Correction: 3:37).

Trenitalia schedules usually update around June 10th so schedules after that date may not be showing yet.

Try using June 9th as a test date to see what trains should be available from Salerno to Roma Termini on Tuesdays. You just won't be able to book until trains for the month/date you'll be traveling become active on the site.

Depending on when you want to leave Salerno and arrive in Rome, in the shortest amount of time, you may need to change trains at Napoli Centrale. If booking through the Trenitalia site, your train from Salerno>Naples will be a regionale or other Trenitalia train and not the Circumvesuviana.

Ok, by fast train do you mean direct (no changes) or the fastest - least amount of time? Salerno is a small train station and does not have a lot of direct or Frecci trains to Rome. Most required a change somewhere. There is a direct Frecci at 4.44pm taking 2, 46mins but there is also a Intercity direct at 3.37 that is only ten minutes slower. There is an even faster route at 8.01 am to Rome in 2, 7 min with one change - starts as Regionale and changes to a Frecci. Just go on the web site - trenitalia and plug in your locations Search all trains. You have many options.

Frank, thanks for pointing out my error. It clearly says Salerno, and I read Sorrento. A little tired, I guess. I removed my comment.

Unless it has changed with the current difficulties, Italo used to start most of their southern services at Salerno. Salerno>Napoli>Roma (often Roma Tiburtina) with no changes. More of their trains have recently been calling at Roma Termini too.

Have a look on the Italo website. https://www.italotreno.it/en

They notify on the website how most of their services have been cancelled due to the virus situation. Things may change.

Salerno is the southern terminus of the Turin-Milan-Bologna-Florence-Rome-Naples-Salerno fast line and while most services are between Milan and Rome, there are plenty of fast services between Salerno and Rome. This is a bad time to inquire, as summer schedules are not loaded yet and present services are severely limited for the virus epidemy - travellers are checked by police leaving and arriving, only those traveling for work (if working is allowed), medical visits (obviously not coronavirus), returning to their registered residence or traveling to assist an elder or handicapped person are allowed. Only half of the places are reservable and the other half is left empty. This of course has completely altered the usual traveling patterns and having a look now is not an hint of what the service may be in future.

Ooh, good point about Italo trains, Nigel. I spaced those off Salerno>Rome.
Also a good point about the virus affecting current schedules, asps2.

Regardless, IF Italy is ready to welcome visitors when you're scheduled to go, there will be trains available, Shelley, so don't worry.

It's an easy trip from Rome to Salerno. Did it last year, and Salerno is quite a charming little town. Easy walk from train station to Ferry dock. You will love the ferry ride to Positano. You are right off the Amalfi Coast, so have your camera ready! Great shots of the coastline, yachts, fishermen, etc. Absolutely charming.
