We got tickets right outside the train station and took the bus. Going that direction the bus will be next to the hill, not to the cliff down to the water. However, the road is very narrow, so if you sit on the left side of the bus, you will get heart-stopping views. And you will also see just how close you get to the vehicles going the other direction.

Before you exit the station, turn to the left and you will see the door to a newspaper/magazine store that sells tickets. Have a great trip.

I went from Rome to Salerno via train two weeks ago. Walked to the ferry which is a mere few minutes walk...Travelmar ferry 12 euro to Positano and an incredible view of the Amalfi coast. You will not be disappointed.

The ferry is the most enjoyable, so I would bank on that, but if it gets cancelled due to bad weather or for any other reason, the bus is a good backup, it is very frequent...

Depending on your travel date, Travelmar ferries may not depart much past 15:30, but you could easily walk to the port to check. On p. 1128 of Rick's Italy book, or on Google maps, you can see just how close the bus stop and Salerno Concordia port are to Salerno train station. Buses start in Salerno, so they will be empty when boarding starts but could fill up as you go along the coast.
