Salerno to Pompeii

I am planning a few days on the Amalfi Coast and have done so before, but this time would like to visit Pompeii approaching from the south, specifically from Salerno, however, Trenitalia is not giving me that option although it looks on the map as though the train goes right through Pompeii. Anyone know if this is possible?

There is a commuter train between the two but it is a private line and therefore, does not show up on Trenitalia. It is called Circumivesuviana. Runs several times an hour. Just show, buy a ticket and go. Stops right at the front door of Pompeii.

The Circumvesuviana doesn't go to Salerno. You have to take a regular train from Salerno to Naples Centrale, then catch the Circumvesuviana from there. If you catch a fast train in Salerno, the journey to Naples takes only 40 minutes. As Frank said, the Circumvesuviana stops at the Pompeii entrance. The stop is called "Pompeii Scavi." Circumvesuviana Naples Centrale to Pompeii is 38 minutes.

Take the train from Salerno to Pompei (the new town). From the station, you can catch a cab, a local bus or even walk (about a half hour) to the Pompeii site. It's much faster and less expensive than going via Naples. When you check schedules on Trenitalia website, be sure to use just one "i" in Pompei.

Thank you Frank that is what I was looking for. I had never noticed that they drop the second "i". I also discovered that there is a bus from Salerno to Pompei, which may eliminate what looks like a fairly long walk from the train station to the entrance.
