We will be in Salerno for 8 hours on a cruise stop. My Mother, who is elderly and recovering from chemo, and my brother, who is recovering from an ankle injury, and my husband (ancient historian) really want to go to Paestum but the train or bus is not an easy option because of my mother and brother. Is taking a taxi roundtrip from Salerno to Paestum possible, and how much would it cost? We would want the taxi to wait if possible while we tour the site. Any advise?
The Rick Steve's Italy book has several recommended services for reaching Paestum from Sorrento. You might check with the driving companies listed and see if they are available to pick up from Salerno rather than Sorrento. :)
Please be aware... you can view the site from the road that goes thru town, but to enter the site, you are on uneven ground. Mostly gravel and grass.
The museum is very good and has elevators.
Thank you all for your advise!
We rented a car for the day in Sorrento, drive the Amalfi coast down to Paestum, and had a great time.
Paestum very much worth the trouble. We rented a car at in Salerno to drive there and my one regret was not stopping at any of the roadside stands as we drove through water buffalo country; the bufalo mozzarella opportunities seem as plentiful as blueberry stands in Jersey but you drive out of that area pretty quickly. Whoever's behind the wheel, make time for a mozzarella break.
