Salerno to Herculaneum

Should I worry about buying advance train tickets for round trip for Salerno to Herculaneum or take my chances in June? Seems like there are trains running that route about every hour and only need 3 seats. Having no idea how long we might want to spend touring the site, it's difficult to choose a return time.

We did this same trip in Jan 23. It’s a local train so no need to book. Just get tickets at the station or buy on the trenitallia site on the day.

It took us about 20-25 min to talk from Herculaneum to the station near the bay.

When you buy tickets you don’t get allocated seats. I think the trip took about 40 minutes.

Also if you are seeing without a guide allow 2-3 hours. It’s quite compact. Pompeii on the other hand is vast.

I believe you need two trains and a 15 minute walk from Salerno. Second (commuter) train has no reservations. First train does not need reservations to Naples. June is hot and crowded.

My recommendation is to walk to Portici - Ercolano. Which is about 1.7 km walk.

Then its a direct commuter train through to Salerno.

The other option is to walk to Ercolano Scavi which is 500 metres, catch the train to naples and then onto Salerno.

We did the first option. However it is a 25 min walk.
