Salerno to Amalfi Sita Sud questions

Hello,

I need to go from Salerno to Amalfi on Nov 18th. Ferries will have shut down by then, I gather, so I will have to use the Sita bus. There have been questions in the past regarding bus travel in that region, but want to make sure my understanding of it is current for my situation.

There is now the option to buy tickets digitally using the Sita Sud app (Unicocampania), but seeing the poor reviews it has, I think I will just go with the option of buying tickets from the newsstand inside the Salerno train station. I assume that while the bus schedule will be lighter at that time of the year, the buses won't be as crowded? Aside from my regular sized backpack, I will have one roller bag with me--EU flight size carry-on dimensions. Can I carry that into the bus with me? Or will I need to request the bus driver to open the luggage compartment for storage?

I am thinking of buying a return ticket from Amalfi to Salerno at the same time. The tickets don't have a date or time attached, they only get activated upon validation, right? I will be in that region for no more than a week.

I will return to Salerno and continue my Italy trip from there. I imagine, it is a good idea to do an overnight at Salerno so I have plenty of margin to catch my train out of there.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I took the bus from Amalfi to Salerno, about a 7am bus, and then took the train from Salerno at about 9am.

No need to spend the night in Salerno.

@Marco I will likely do that. Shouldn't be a problem in the slow season, I think I am being over cautious. Thanks!

Since the Salerno/Amalfi SITA bus originates in Salerno at the Salerno Centrale bus/train station, you should be able to get right on in November. Probably the same in the other direction.

If you decide to stay overnight in Salerno (it's my favorite Italian city other than Roma) book at the Hotel Plaza, directly across the street from the station. You'll probably get a clean, mid-sized room including breakfast at no more than 120 Euro. We stayed there 4 nights a year ago April and loved it.

Have you taken weather into your considerations? Mother Nature has a wicked sense of humor.

Not sure about mid November, but we were there in late October 2025, staying in Salerno for 4 nights. Every day we were there the ferry was cancelled due to weather. We took the Sita bus from Salerno to Amalfi town on a Saturday. The stop at the train station is not the first stop, it's the second stop. We walked to the first stop which is about 10 minutes from the station (at the bus depot). We stood at the wrong bus shelter for a little while before realizing our mistake. We got to the right stop and there were already many people there. When the bus came (~10am on a Saturday) we got a seat (chose wrong, took the right side, should have taken the left, but no matter we were at least sitting). By the time we got to the train station stop, there were many more people waiting than could be let on, standing room only. A few people did get on with luggage, not sure there was even an option to stow it underneath. At least 30 people were left standing at the train station stop, I'm guessing they waited for the next bus an hour later. I'm not sure if our experience was normal but clearly end of October on a weekend, it's still crowded.
As far as buying a ticket, round trip or not, it doesn't guarantee a seat, so just be aware of that.
