We have read that getting to Positano is challenging. We will be in Rome for a few days, and we can either take the train to Naples and hire a private driver, shared shuttle or get a cab for easiest option to Positano (which looks like a 2-hr drive) or look in to getting a Ferry from Naples to Positano. The other option is take train from Rome to Salerno and then the ferry to Positano. There are two of us. Which is really the best and fastest option? We really don't want to do the local train from Naples to Sorrento. I have read other posts about getting there - just wondering of Salerno isn't easier. If we arrive at either station early in the morning - say by 9 AM - will traffic be less? Suggestions for shuttle services, private drivers, and options welcome! Thanks!
Ck with rome2 rio.com for your options. I hope u can go via ferry as it would be gorgeous. I traveled via ferry from Sorrento to Naples and it was absulotely beautiful. I have also done same and it was wonderful. Which ever did choose it will be a delight.
We are doing similar next month, turning in our rental car (I chose Salerno) and then making our way to our air bnb in Positano. We planned to take the ferry from Salerno to Positano, but our host suggested this: "providing the ferries are still running, they usually run until the end of October, I would suggest taking the ferry or bus to Amalfi and then taking the bus to Positano. Casa XXX is on the top part of Positano, the pier in Positano is very far down and you would have to walk up hills and steps to get to the bus stop (but of course it's up to you). When guests have luggage I always suggest getting off in Amalfi as you simply get off the ferry and onto the bus!
If the ferry is not departing simply take the Sita bus to Amalfi and then change in Amalfi and take the Sita to Sorrento stopping off in Positano."
...we are a little disappointed we won't ferry the whole way but it does seem more practical to combine the two Consider where your endpoint is...if it's right down at the beach area, you might be okay with ferry the whole way.
Have fun!
Joan is right about where the ferry dock and where the bus stop is in Positano. We went from Rome to Salerno as our base camp. We took the ferry up the coast to Positano. The view of Positano from the water is gorgeous, but it is a very steep climb from the dock into the village. With luggage it could be a real headache! We also took the SITA bus from Sorrento to Positano, and the bus stop is much higher from the dock. You should check where your accommodation are when you are making your choice.
There are no ferries that go from Naples to Positano. You'd need to go to either Capri or Sorrento and change ferrys. Salerno is much easier to reach Positano.
Schedules.
The train from Rome to Salerno then ferry is the most direct and easiest option. The ferry dock is just a few minutes walk from Salerno’s train station, much simpler than doing that in Naples. Any combo of bus/private car from Naples area will get time-consuming and likely more expensive. Traveling by ferry is terrific and I would make that your first option.
That’s an intriguing suggestion by previous poster to take the bus from Amalfi, it is indeed a steep climb to get anywhere in Positano. Though I will say there is nothing quite like the view when you pull into Positano from the sea.
