My wife and I are planning to arrive in Salerno from Florence on the fast train the first week in October, 2024. Approximately how long would that train trip take?
We are planning to stay in Salerno 3 nights and looking for hotel or B&B or other lodging recommendations. What area of Salerno would be preferable to stay in considering access to the train station and ferry port and view or perhaps the historic center. One day we plan to
take a ferry along the Amalfi Coast seeing and getting off the ferry to visit a town or two, then going back to sleep in Salerno. On the second full day we are thinking of a day trip to Paestum. What are those logistics? Is Paestum worth seeing? Our plans are to head to Naples for 3 nights after the 3 nights in Salerno
and see Pompeii and Capri as day trips from Naples.
Any and all thoughts and suggestions are much appreciated.
Cheers, Alan
Hello Alan and welcome back!
Florence to Salerno is about 4 hours direct fast train
Salerno to Paestum is about 30 min regional train-no need to purchase tix in advance
Check the schedule carefully because there is a gap between mid morning til later afternoon
Plan to visit the museum in Paestum, see the temples and have lunch at one of the well shaded cafes along the side with views of the temples—magnificent!
We stayed at Hotel Montestella-right on the Corso - 5 min walk to train and about 10 to ferry port and Duomo
It doesn’t have a view but the location is great and it’s budget friendly, modern amenities, rooms recently updated.
They don’t have their own website but are listed on Booking.com.
I believe one or two of the rooms have a rooftop terrace
Be sure to plan an evening to enjoy and partake in the lively passegiatta and take a walk along the lovely lungomare ( waterfront!)
Best gelato at Il Nettuno

Salerno's Duomo, with the tomb of the Apostle Matthew, is well worth your time.
In 2022, we stayed at the Salerno Centro B&B and highly recommend it. We used Salerno as a base for day trips to the Amalfi Coast, Paestum, and some Operation Avalanche sites.
We've stayed at Salerno Centro B&B, in 2015 and liked it. This time, next April, we've got a good recommendation for Hotel Plaza directly across the circle from the Salerno Centrale train/bus station. According to our friends, it's clean & inexpensive.
We have stayed at Salerno Antica Bed & Breakfast twice. It's a short walk from the train station and right on the edge of the Old Town. Danielle is an excellent host and makes a delicious breakfast for his guests. His family even picked us up at the train station one time when my wife was having mobility issues. On one of our earlier trips we hired Danielle for a few hours to give us a personal Amalfi Coast tour in his own car
You can see pictures of the 3 rooms on the web site...
on Jay's recommendation, I stayed at Salerno Centro B&B and loved it! Plan to have your dinners there. It has a wide choice and the lowest prices on the AC.

And upon Chani's recommendation...in April we plan to devour some sweet delicacies at Sal De Riso in Minori. Quite possibly the top pastry joint on the A.C.
Yes, a righteous day basing in Salerno would be visiting the Amalfi Coast by SITA bus or ferry, then returning for a nap, then dinner in Salerno's Old Town. Many choices, many cuisines--we had Greek souvlaki & sushi last time in town--at maybe 2/3 of the prices on the A.C.
Jay, I got that recommendation and so many more from our dearly departed Zoe. I only had the opportunity to try a few of their delights, the lemon tiramisu was my favorite. On a cold day, the hot chocolate was yummy.
