Salerno Cathedral

I would like to tour the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Angels, St. Matthew and St. Gregory VII in Salerno during my trip to Italy at the end of November. I am not quite sure of the procedure to do so. Do I need to reserve a time/date? is there a fee to enter? Are there times when it is not open to public visits?

Thank you to anyone who can give me some clarity.

When I visited in October we just walked in and got tickets and it wasn't crowded at all. I don't think there are many tourists in Salerno and many of those are passing through rather than touristing. And in November with the AC closed I can't imagine it will be busier.

As I recall the only odd thing was that the ticket came with an additional religious site in town so you had to choose which other sight you wanted to see. I didn't really want a combo ticket and we struggled a little bit with my Italian and their English until I figured out it wasn't optional. I think this was tied to the restoration funds for other places so they were attaching them to the "big ticket" church.

Hopefully you'll get to see the lights on in November in Salerno, enjoy,

We visited the cathedral at the beginning of February (2025). Its beautiful! We purchased the tickets across the plaza the cathedral is located on. No specific time/date,no line for ticket purchase or to get into the cathedral. I just looked at their website and it doesn't give much detail for visitors. Only a guess, but perhaps chose a day other than Sunday.

I don't imagine there are a lot of weddings in November, but plans to visit churches on Saturday can be thwarted by weddings. Saturday seems to be a popular day for weddings.

Oh, I doubt you'll be wearing shorts in November but it is a working church so the modesty and decorum rules apply.

I've extolled Salerno's virtues over many years on this forum--correct, Katherine?

We just like the place. Stayed there for 3 nights in April at the Hotel Plaza right across from the train station, about $100/night, great deal. Dinners reasonably priced through the city, there's a nice little beach with cheap Aperol Spritzes. There's always some kind of festival going on the park.

Enjoy!
