I'm aware that many visitors to Amalfi et al. book lodging in Sorrento (in large part because of RS's praises), but due to other venues we plan to visit without changing lodging (Paestum and Pompeii in addition to the Penisola Sorrentina) we are considering Salerno. Any suggestions for lodging in Salerno convenient to train station, bus or ferry (for Amalfi). Also, is there a bus to Paestum or is the train the best bet?
I'll be there in two months. Prices to stay in Salerno are much cheaper than other parts of the coast. I booked a room at B&B Il Fuso. Three nights will run me 125 Euro, which is not too shabby at all. Here's the website (http://www.ilfusosalerno.it/). They have excellent reviews on Trip Advisor. Website is in Italian, the owner doesn't speak much English, but I've been able to communicate with her just fine. From what I can tell it's rather close to the train station. Another alternative is to book an apartment through airbnb.com
YAY Salerno! I love it, as you can see, I lived in the centro storico (historic center) for 2 years... The closest hotel to the train station is Hotel Plaza, DIRECTLY in front of the station, at the beginning of the shopping street, il Corso....it is very convenient, but I would say that anywhere in the historic center would be great, most is within 10 min of the station by walking, but the buses are great to get around as well.... I ave heard bad things on the internet about the Gran Hotel Salerno, but I did have some friends stay there and their stay was without issue... There is a hotel that is about halfway down the corso that I have seen on the internet, I vaguely remember it when I lived there, but it looks very adequate as well... The bus and train to Paestum let off in 2 different places if I remember correctly, the train is easier in the way of comfort and room, but I know you have to walk down the road it drops you off at about a half mile...
While you're in Salerno be sure to check out the duomo. It's beautiful and quite interesting. I believe the architecture shows some Moorish influence.

We went to, and go back to, Sorrento because of its overwhelming beauty and fabulous views. And the lemon trees. Nothing wrong with Salerno. I got a tyre changed there and the guy was a real hoot, as we spent most of the time his guys were working on the car talking about Formula 1 and World Rally cars. Had a great time. Just love Sorrento.
