Salerno and Surrounding Area

Good day all,

Can anyone suggest any Wineries or villages to visit outside of Salerno? We have been to the Amalfi Coast/ Pompeii/ Sorrento/Positano/Naples/Ravello/Capri, etc., so was looking more to the east/north east or south east of Salerno. Thanks in advance!

I stayed in Pisciotta, which is lovely. I considered Santa Maria di Castellabate. I only scratched the surface of this area and hope to return. There is a not a lot in guide books, but an internet search of "Cilento" will bring up several good resources.

Hi,
Not a winery, not a village, but Paestum is an impressive archeological site. Very different from Pompeii and Herculaneum - it is an older site, with spectacular ruined temples and 10% of the crowds of Pompeii.

My wife and I just returned from Italy. Paestum was wonderful.
We've been to Athens and Paestum was like walking into the Parthenon. We could walk into 2 of the 3 temples.

The ruins of the houses are in worse shape than Pompeii but we were free to walk (nearly) everywhere.
I was a very nice day.

If we had more time, there a few water buffalo farms nearby that do tours, show how mozzarella is made, and sell it.

Stayed in Salerno 5 nights and it was awesome. Pizzeria Trianon is kind of a dive place but tremendous pizza, cheap. Had a great meal at Angolo Masuccio.

I'd second the suggestion of Cilento - I particularly like the three towns that make up Castellabate (Castellabate itself on the hill, then the two coastal parts of Santa Maria and San Marco) - but the whole area is lovely. If you have a car, the hilly areas away from the coast are very scenic , although the roads can be very narrow and winding. The coastal road all the way down to Maratea is worth driving.

I went to the Vannulo buffalo farm on the way to Paestum on a Sunday. If you want to buy fresh mozzarella you have to get there very early or order in advance. I didn't see any tour offered (but I was there in February - definitely off-season). I did wander around a bit and visited the buffalo cows. I had the best canolo ever there and really good gelato too.
