In Salerno I recommend staying along Corso Vittorio Emanuele which is a large pedestrian street that runs from the train station north into the old town. It is the main walking/shopping center of the city and all of Salerno is on parade most of the time. The old town is crowded with bars and restaurants and you'll probably be using the train station frequently so this is a good target area.
You'll probably end up walking up and down the corso either to the train station or looking for dinner so staying here is convenient and puts you in the center of what you'll probably be looking for.

Would stay there again, very nicely renovated rooms
