Safety walking in Rome at night.

We are thinking of staying at a hotel by the Largo Argentine Ruins. We love to wander around in the evenings/early night. We read that in the evening, there is music, etc. on the Piazza Navona, which is a half mile from where we would be staying. Just wondering if it is fairly safe to walk around that area once it gets dark. Thank you.

Have been to Rome twice and had no issues walking around at night. Take the normal precautions and stay away from secluded areas and you’ll be fine. There are plenty of people walking around the historic center at night. Have a nice time.

As a solo traveler in Rome, I felt comfortable walking around Piazza Navona, the Pantheon and the Colosseum, and walking back from there to my hotel by Termini alone after dark. There were plenty of people around. My favorite evenings in Rome were spent walking around the Pantheon in the dark, and then wandering over to Piazza Navona. Both were really pretty at night! There was a constant police presence in both of these areas.

No worries. By American standards any Italian City is safe, especially in the busy city centers. The shady areas in Europe, with housing projects and stuff, tend to be the suburban areas, while the inner cities are nice and safe (the opposite of what happens in America). But I’m sure you don’t need to go to the shady suburbs, there is nothing there that would be of interest to a tourist.

Have been to Rome a number of times and 2 visits were girl's trips with my sisters and niece staying in apt. near P. Navona. Every night we were out late wandering and wandering some more. Love seeing the sites lit up in the evening. We never felt unsafe even walking down Via d. Conciliazione, the street from St. Peter's to Castel Sant Angelo, late at night where many homeless sleep under the arcades. These visits were during the summer months and in Oct and lots of people out and about.

Do a little advance homework and identify where the taxi stands are, near where you will be. Then if you're tired or uncomfortable, you can get one back to hotel.

Thank you all for your responses. With your shared experiences and the webcams, we are getting very excited for our trip. So is staying by the Largo Argentine a good spot for getting around, especially at night? We were originally going to stay closer to the Piazza Navona but I am kind of drawn to a hotel (pensione) by the Largo Argentine. Thanks again!

That area feels very safe at night.
Primarily referring to the Pantheon and Piazza Navona area as I have experience with it.

Piazza Navona stays active with people, music performers, street performers, those annoying hawkers selling those light up helicopter things, etc... ; this continues until past midnight most every night I am fairly certain.

Crowds are out until late, there is actually a visible police and even military presence in the area so would be hard to find a safer feeling area honestly. I imagine most of tourist Rome is similar.

Largo Argentine the place you mention your hotel is in ; is a 5 minute walk to the Pantheon so will feel similarly safe.

I love the Largo Argentina area. Very walkable to much of the center and great bus options.

As to safety, in 5 years living in Rome I never felt unsafe. I walked to-and-from work through Villa Borgheae even in the dark of winter.

Another bonus of the Largo Argentina area is the easy access to buses and trams to get to other sites. Plus the cat sanctuary is pretty cool.

Again, thank you all for your input. Is the Piazza Navona about a 15 minute walk from Largo Argentine area?

We absolutely loved strolling around Rome in the evenings last May, we walked EVERYWHERE. We did 13 miles or more each day. Our hotel was a little bit out of the touristy area, and since we were kind of figuring out how to use public transportation we ended up walking to most places at night time. We felt totally safe at all times. I heard so much about pick-pocketing, but if you keep your things close by, you will be ok! I'll never forget the music, the busy piazzas, outdoor restaurants. Gosh it was magical. Have a GREAT time!

I travel alone and have walked all over Rome in the evenings. Very safe. Piazza Navona is a great place any time of day but especially lovely in the evening.

Very safe- I’m a single woman and I rented an apartment in that area for 6 weeks and never had a problem.
