We are starting our trip in Italy by staying in Sorrento for 4 nights and we were thinking of seeing Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius on our drive back towards Rome - so we will have our luggage in the car. Is there safe parking near Pompeii and Herculaneum or would it be better to stay an extra night in Sorrento and do the Pompeii area as a day trip??

As long as you're staying in Sorrento, I'd add an extra night and visit Pompeii from there. No point in finding another hotel just to be 20 minutes closer.

As long as all your stuff is in the trunk you would be safe. We parked there for about 6 hours. The lot did have a couple of attendants though...
