Safety of area around Rome's Termini Station?

This is for January of 2019.

We have a business partner who lives in Trastevere who advised us to avoid staying within 5KM of Termini Station. We will have a family with no travelers under age 18 and no physical limitations. For anyone who has stayed in that area, did you have any issues or concerns while there? Currently, we are looking at going more towards the Tiber and Trastevere. The cost is higher there though so we'd like to see if it is worth the extra expense.

Did he mean that literally? I think Trastevere, the Vatican and much of central Rome is within 5km of Termini. Not a very helpful warning from your friend.

I was last there in 2015, but I stayed near Termini and felt safe, even walking back to my hotel after dark alone. It was a very convenient area for me to stay in. I would stay there again.

Why did they advise you to avoid staying in the area? I've stayed within a ten minute walk of the station and encountered no problems whatsoever. Sure, it's a bit grimy in places most areas around major train stations tend to be. Walked around at all hours of the night and early morning and saw or experienced nothing to cause me concern.

We always stay near Termini, and have never felt unsafe. We stay at the Aberdeen when on our own; on RS tours we've stayed at the Aberdeen, Sonya, and Nardizzi Americano. Even when I've been out after dark on my own, I have never been uncomfortable.

Scott, we too have stayed less than 10 minutes from the Termini Station. Once in 2006 and again in 2014. Neither time did we feel uncomfortable. This area is recommended in RS Italy Guidebooks. We felt that it was away from the main tourist area, quiet, walking distance to major attractions, & restaurants. We stayed at the well appointed Residenza Cellini both times in the Termini area. I wouldn't hesitate staying in this area.

While I am not fond of the area, and the crowds at the station can be very off-putting, you do not have to get far away before you encounter quiet streets.

Yes, at night, homeless may gather in front of the station and camp out. Yes, there are panhandlers, but they are everywhere in Rome (at least they were when we left in 2016 after living there for several years). Just mind your selves, know where you are going, watch your possessions, ignore mendicants: things you should do in Trasyevere as well!

Ask you associate why? He may not be as familiar with the Termini area as many travelers are. Y

Staying 5K away would pretty much put you outside of the historic center of Rome! While we didn't exactly stay right across the street from Termini, we've bunked within a short walk of it with no concerns at all. We've also been in and out of the station for transit purposes and had no issues. You've gotten some reassurance from the folks above so relax, OK?

I'm sure your friend is very nice but please come to us if he/she gives you any further well-meaning advice?
Oh, and a warm welcome to the forums, Scott! :O)

Sorry, that was a type. .5 or half a km. Also, the partner is a native Roman so I expect he should be fairly aware of neighborhoods. But we all have different views and experiences.

Who knows what the standards are for the warning. But a .5Km is less than a third of a mile so that is not that far either. Maybe just the streets around Termini. That is a small area. The hotels we use, Sonya and Aberdeen, probably are just outside that range.

We have stayed in that area off and on for the past 20 years. We prefer the area because of the convenience to local transit. We are fine with it. Maybe because we are very familiar with the area but it is our preferred area to stay and will be there again next summer/fall. However, our experience is limited to the areas mostly west and little north of Termini. It is a very busy area with lots of people moving around and that adds to the safety of the area. No dark, lonely, empty streets. Some good restaurants in the area also.

Your partner probably meant 500 meters (0.5km) or approximately 1/4 of a mile from the station.
My cousin, who also lives near Trastevere (Monteverde), would probably suggest the same. She tries to avoid the station itself at night when she is alone. She is a young woman in her mid 30’s and she told me the area is now full of seedy transients and hordes of North African migrants who congregate there, who occasionally like to harass young women walking alone. There are also lots of pickpockets, particularly Roma people, who prey on tourists.
As Laurel mentioned, as you move away 2 short blocks from the station, especially toward the Opara House and the Viminale Palace, things are totally different and the area is just as good as any place else.
The Viminale Palace is the seat of the Ministry of the Interior, and I guess migrants want to stay as far as possible from the Interior Minister Matteo Salvini.
However I would stay either in Trastevere or in the historical center (Pantheon, Navona area). Way better than the Termini area.

Ah, .5 is different! When I was walking around alone at night I was staying at the Aberdeen which is a little outside of that. I probably wouldn’t want to stay quite that close either just because of more traffic/crowds. There are plenty of nice places to stay that are still in easy walking distance to Termini but maybe a little farther than .5k.

I am a single woman who usually travels alone and for the past 18 years I have stayed at least once a year at the same hotel near Termini station. I prefer to stay in this area because it’s a great location for day trips and you can catch a bus to anywhere from the train station. Never once have I felt in danger, I am always aware of myself, my purse and my surroundings, however.

Scott,

I normally stay at either Hotel Sonya or Hotel Aberdeen, both of which are within walking distance to Roma Termini and have never had any problems. I've walked back to the hotel as late as about 22:00 and there are still lots of people in the restaurants and on the streets near the hotel. Access is controlled to both hotels at night, so only guests are allowed in. However, I agree with others that the station or surrounding streets is probably not a good place to be late at night.

Pay attention if you happen take bus 64 or on the train to the Vatican both stop at Termini and are known as PickPocket Expresses :}

As well as the #64 bus, the #40 bus can also be infested with pickpockets at times. You'll need to be vigilant anywhere in the city on any public transit. Be sure to wear a money belt and only keep your daily expense cash in pockets.

We stayed at iQ Hotel Roma last month & it’s about 5 minutes from Termini. We didn’t haveany issues walking around at night & it felt safe as any other cities we’ve been to.

I would stay in Trastevere or Monti. Although the Termini area is touted as centralized to everything, Rome really isn't that big. To me, there would be no real compelling reason to stay in that area.
