safety in Rome for a woman alone with children

On the Roman leg of our trip (my 11-year-old-twin daughters and I) we'll be staying in an apartment in the Monte Verde area (southwest of the city center.) We've been to Rome twice before, so I'm comfortable with the public transport, making me more willing to be outside the center, but I'm wondering if there are areas we should avoid in the evenings when returning to the flat. I've heard some folks can be a little put off by this very "American" question - just seems like due diligence to me...any thoughts? Will I truly give offense if I ask this question of the woman that owns the flat? Thanks for your time,
Marisa

Monteverde is one of the most upscale areas in Rome. Some of Italy's most famous actors and movie directors live there, including Bernardo Bartolucci or Roberto Benigni, whom I'm sure you've heard of. So your question is equivalent to saying that you have a flat in Beverly Hills but would like to know if there are areas you should avoid. Yes there are areas you should avoid in Rome, like Tor Bella Monaca, La Magliana et al. But Monteverde is definitely not one. As a matter of fact 90% of Romans wish they could afford to live there. Having said that, one should exercise reasonable caution everywhere, including even Beverly Hills or Rancho Santa Fe.

Marisa, you ask about "safety" and not security. From a safety standpoint you are better off in Rome than most cities in your home state. Violent crime is not as common there as it is here. One thing going for you, in Rome or anywhere else, is there are 3 of you. Most violent offenders are not interested in dealing with 3 screaming females. From a security standpoint, guard your valuables well. Petty theft should be your main concern.

Especially as late as you'll be out with 2 11-year-olds, I wouldn't be concerned. Unless you'll be bar-hopping 'til 4am... ;-)
