We are staying in Sorrento the last few days before we fly home to US from Italy, mother and daughter in May. After reading it seems that if you have an early flight out of Naples the best thing to do is to stay the night in Naples. Just wondering if anyone has a place to recommend, preferably with a shuttle service to airport early am. Our flight leaves at 7a.

You could try Hotel Chiaia as it's in a "safe" area. Ask your hotel staff the day prior to travel to arrange a shuttle or taxi, and you should have no trouble getting to the airport.

I don't know of hotel shuttles that begin that early, but you can easily have your hotel arrange for a taxi to the airport at any time of night - I do this often, never had a no-show. Prices from your hotel to the airport should be known in advance (hotel front desk can get this info), there may be a surcharge for pieces of luggage in the trunk and/or for nighttime departure (you will need to be at the airport by 5ish, so leave your hotel by 4-4:30am). The airport is not far from the city.
