Safe & fun landing in Rome

Hi everyone!

Wow! Already in just a few hours I have received the helpful suggestion that we don't need to be met with a guide at the airport and that there are flat rate taxi's to historic Rome.

We have made several trips to Paris using the flat rate taxi system there -- and we found this to be a great way to go on arrival as opposed to taking the train when just arriving from a long airplane flight.

Also it was pointed out that we had better take more time to get over jet lag -- so I think we will plan to spend at least three nights.

We are not traveling with bicycles (we will be renting bikes later in the Pisa area) -- and hope to have very light luggage.

Now we have to research Rome -- especially by the RS guide book and by listening to RS Audio Europe.

Hopefully I can figure out how to search recent posts here for recommended hotels in Rome -- but if anyone is eager to share a recent great hotel experience, please do write! Thanks everyone!

I would definitely recommend at least a day or two to recover from jetlag and get the essentials taken care of. Are you travelling with bikes? This will affect the advice on getting around. Depending on where you are staying in Rome either take the train and cab from the train station or a taxi from the airport. But again what kind of transportation you need depends on luggage and bikes.

There is a high speed train to Florence from Rome (~1:40) and then a slower local regionale train to Pisa (~1:00) and you will need to change in Florence. There is tram from the train station to the airport which is very close to the city in Pisa.

Let us know,

If you get a hotel within historic Rome (within the Aurelian walls), then the official taxis at the airport will get you there for a fixed rate. Use the search feature here for recommended hotels in Rome. Filter for forum posts within the last year. I believe There are a few that are handy to the Termini train station.

Since you plan to go to Pisa after a couple of nights maybe you may want to stay near the stazione Termini. Not my favorite area but around Via del Viminale there are several nice hotels. But you need to specify the level of accommodations and the budget. You don’t need a guide to meet you at the airport. You just need to reserve the hotel. Then you can take a train to the Termini station (€14 pp) or a taxi for I think 55 or 60€ (flat fare). If the hotel you choose is not walking distance from the station then take a taxi directly from the airport.
The fastest way to Pisa is high speed to Florence then a regional train to Pisa. You can also take the coastal rail line to Pisa with no changes but that is not a high speed line so it takes a bit longer.
