Hello, I will be starting in Rome, staying there for 3 to 4 days. Thought I would take the train to Sorrento, base there for ? days to visit Naples, Pompeii and the Coast. I thought renting a car in Sorrento to visit Calabria, Basilicata (along the Gulf of Taranto) up the Adriatic Sea coastline to perhaps Pescara......drop the car off. What is a reasonable time frame to do this in a leisurely but not lazy way, is it reasonable at all?
I plan on continuing to visit Assisi, Florence, Pisa, Cinque Terra (4 to 5 days?)Venice Milan and Como (not in that order)
Total time in Italy 5 weeks, heading to Paris for the last week/
Any suggestions will be appreciated. time of travel starts mid June.
With 5 weeks you can easily do everything you want.
If you're going to head south from Sorrento, one suggestion I would make is take a boat or hydrofoil to Salerno and rent the car there rather than renting in Sorrento. This will save you from having to drive on the Amalfi peninsula - which is not only hairy but can be very time consuming..
When we did this the car rental company even sent a driver over to the Salerno docks to pick us up and bring us to the rental office.
The drive from Salerno down to Calabria and the toe is easy; it's almost all "interstate highway" driving. Don't forget to stop at Paestum.
