We are flying from Rome to Catania on Ryanair. While reading through past posts (2009) on this website, I noticed that several travelers indicated that Ryanair was very strict regarding baggage size. I am wondering if anyone has flown with them lately and if they are still brutally strict while adhereing to baggage size as posted on their website? Thanks!
Last time was 2012 but yes, very strict on size and amount. Watched them make people stuff purses and shopping bags into the one carry on you're allowed. Watched people force bags into the luggage size dealio at the gate. Never had them actually weigh my carry on though. One exception to the excess carry - ons: they'll let you carry a tray of cannoli in addition to your 1 bag. Go by the restrictions listed on the site and you'll have no worries. Never flew 'em into Catania but Palermo was very disorganized.
My experience is also a few years ago, but I found them to be VERY strict with luggage weights. My checked bag was very slightly over the limit (I tried to minimize the weight but had no way to check it) and I got nicked with a hefty charge. From what I remember, they didn't "test" my carry-on bag in the luggage sizer, so that was a slight benefit.
These days I prefer to use EasyJet or other budget carriers such as Vueling or Aegean whenever possible, as I've found that my flights with them are generally more pleasant.
Ryanair is very strict. There was a report last year that they generated more revenue from extra fees than the base air fare. In fact, the gate people are on some type of a commission or quote for generating addition revenue from oversize bags and other infractions. This is one airline that you do not take their rules lightly.
Follow the restrictions on your ticket and also don't risk being late for the flight.
