Ryan Air from Rome to Venice

We are going to traveling from Rome to Venice next summer. Ryan Air is very reasonable. We were going to do an overnight train but then we found Ryan Air. Anyone have any experience with this airline? Your opinion would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

From all of the reading, it hardly seems necessary and/or any kind of saving to fly between Rome & Venice. It's almost too short of a train trip to do an overnight also, although it would save you a night of lodging. The tradeoff being that you may arrive too early to check into your Venice hotel. Unless you're doing it as a backpack trip for a couple of days, you may have to drop off your luggage or carry it with you. We'll be taking the ES on a morning train in November from Rome to Venice. The ~4 1/2 hour trip will be a nice break for us, and hopefully will have some good scenery along the way.

Last May, we travelled from Rome to Florence to Venice to Paris. We looked into Ryan Air but found that The Airport that Ryan Air landed at in Venice was so far out of town (1 hour) that we were better off to spend the extra money for the train as it was less hassle and more relaxing. This is also the reason we chose an overnight train to Paris instead of flying Ryan Air. The great thing about rail travel is the stations are right in the centre of the towns, unlike the airports. A 20 euro flight might turn into a lot more due to transportation costs from the airport to your hotel. Make sure you look at what airport your Ryan Air flights are landing in. It is not always the main airport.

I haven't flown with Ryan but did fly from Venice to Rome in March with Alitalia. By the time I got to Rome I wished I had taken the train. If you take into account the time you take to get to the airport, go through security, wait for the plane to depart, fly, land and get your bags and then get into the city the time is almost the same as the train. The bonus being that it is easy to get to the airport by train and the train stops right in Venice a stone's throw from the station. Much less hassle and far less stressful. Do take into account how you will be getting from and to the airport into town and how much that will cost you.
I'm sure if you arrive too early to check into your hotel in Venice they will hold your bags while you go out and sightsee until your room will be ready.

I know this wasn't part of your question but like the others said, the train is so awesome to take. We just got back from Italy and took the train from Venice to Rome...we went on a Eurostar and it really was only about a 5 hour train ride. It went by so fast. The trade-off's is that you don't have to be there ahead of time like at an airport and it drops you off right in the heart of the city...no extra travel from an airport into the city. The trains are so nice and comfortable as well and we couldn't have been more happier. I thought of a plan initially at first but I decided I didn't want to spend half the day in an airport for such a quick ride. We left around 9 in the morning, got back into rome in the early afternoon and had the rest of the day to explore. Good luck with your choice!

Ditto much of above. There really is no reason to fly from Rome to Venice. In the end it's not much of a timesaver (if at all), and the "Venice" airport for RyanAir (as with MANY of their hubs) has little to do with Venice. Be VERY careful with RyanAir flights. Oftentimes their arrivals/departures are very early or very late in the day, which leads to other problems.

Contrary to above posts, but worth consideration, I scheduled a Ryan Air flight this past May for my son and his wife, and they thought it was great. They only had a few days in Italy following a business trip, so time was of essence. Yes, the Ryan Air airports are outside of town, as most airports are. In Rome they took a taxi, and in Venice they took a bus. Their tickets were under $20 each, in fact they may have only been $10 a piece. It was much cheaper than the train, and faster. I don't know how long the train takes from Rome to Venice, but from Florence to Venice is 3 hours, so I presume it is about 6 hours. If you go with Ryan Air besure you read the extra baggage policy carefully. If you will have more than one bag pay in advance as it is half the price. Generally I enjoy the train ride, but in this case, you arrive early in Venice and have an entire day there. I believe the plane leaves around 7:00 am and is about an hour flight.

The Ryanair planes fly out of Treviso, a beautiful little town that is less than 30 minutes outside of Venice. In fact, when we visited Venice, we stayed in Treviso, and took the train in each day to see the sights. It's fast, easy, convenient, and cheap.

My husband and I just returned from Italy and went from Venice to Italy. We considered the exact same question and in fact the plane ticket was cheaper than the train. And it seemed faster. BUT...

We considered that we were 15-20 minutes from the Venice train station and could arrive 15 minutes before the train left and were similarly staying 10 minutes away from the train station in Rome, compared to arriving 1+ hours in advance for the flight plus more than 30mins (and 90 euros for private taxi or much more time for a cheaper option)travel time to the airport. Then extra time to get out of the airport in Rome plus extra travel time and cost for taxi from Rome airport to our hotel. It worked out to similar time and actually more cost to take the plane. That's not considering any delays and the stress of air travel.

We had a comfortable and relaxing train trip to Rome and are so glad we did. So in summary I suggest you consider taking the train instead.
