When I was in Matera on an RS tour they did not mention this for some reason. ;-)
Well, Matera is a provincial capital, so portraying it as a rustic village is a little off base. The story sounds like a writer got his leg pulled, in a friendly and humorous way.
And every night there is a passeggiata through the main street, above the Sassi. Very festive.
