"rush hour traffic" in Verona

is there such a thing as "rush hour traffic" in Verona? We will be picking up a car at the airport and heading south, probably NOT pn the autostrada, on a Friday late afternoon. is traffic any worse at one time vs. another?

I've also read that if possible one should avoid driving on the days between Aug. 28-Sept. 3 as everyone in Italy will be returning from their holidays aawy during those dates. Are the raods heading into Verona likely to be jammed with cars on late sunday afternoon 8/31?

Yes the highways will be crowded, many, many people will be coming back from vacation that day. Traffic in Italy is always worse on Friday evenings and most of all on Sunday evenings, especially on the highways, mostly around the major cities, including Bologna where several major highways intersect. The A4 which runs near Verona gets backed up too, depending if there are any accidents and how many people.
If you can stay off the highways on that weekend of the 28th to the 31st I would highly recommend it, or at least avoid them from late afternoon onwards.

UGH, That's not what I wanted to hear. We do have to drive some on the main circular highway around Verona since we have to go out to the airport to get our car, then head back east to catch the road south to a small town called Ostiglia where my niece will be getting married on Saturday of that weekend. On Sunday the majority of out of town guests will be making their way over to Mantua for the day. We plan to head back to the Verona airport from Mantua, as it is the second point in a triangle from Verona, probably late afternoon. Any time better than another? Can you suggest any roads which might bypass the worst of the traffic? I know it's not a long drive, but I would rather be moving slowly on a windy two lane road than sitting in a jam on the shorter super hiway!
Thanks for the info,

Tracy
