RS Sicily tour 10/2 - week after

I am taking the Sicily tour in early October - am very looking forward to. My father was born in Limina, a village above Taormina (not on the road right above -SP 10 but SP 12 a little north of there about 22km away). I've wanted to visit but haven't gotten to. I just retired and this will be my first major trip since. It will also be my first trip outside of the US, North and Central America.

I'm going to do the RS tour first to get a little grounded in Sicily and see the major sites and then will stay in an Airbnb in Mongiuffi Melia (about halfway between Limina and Taormina) for about 8 days with a small car before heading back to Rome to catch a cruise home to Florida.

Any recommendations for places to see in Sicily that the RS tour doesn't go, especially in the hill towns north of Etna? I know Cefalu is one place to go but interested in any other suggestions.

Thanks

Sounds exciting! Sicily is wonderful — scenic, delicious, diverse, friendly! I took the RS Sicily tour years ago and loved it. The itinerary was a little different back then.
One idea: there is a little stone hill town, just above (as in uphill) Taormina, called Castelmola. Several of us took a taxi for a couple hours, maybe 20-minute mountain ride uphill to the town, poked around the town for maybe an hour. All stone lanes, an old castle, town’s specialty is almond wine, very nice. On the way back, we stopped at a unique small church built into the rocks, with a terrace-like area in front, which looked down over Taormina, including the ancient Greek theater which we had just visited. I remember chatting with a 93-year-old gentleman while looking over Taormina. (He might not be there if you visit, as he’d be about 102 by now. Maybe his son, or grandson, or great-grandson, or some generation of girl, will be waiting for you now.) Pretty memorable afternoon!
