RS Recommendations for Accomodations in Rome

I am waiting on my guidebook to arrive, but wanting to do some research. Can anyone tell me the general area(s) Rick recommends to stay in Rome?

He recommends several areas. His tour groups generally stay in the Termini area using Hotel Sonya and Aberdeen.

The tour I'm going on later this month will stay in the Hotel San Carlo near the Spanish Steps.

We are on the RS Rome tour 2019 staying at the Hotel Lancelot, near the Coliseum. The book has hotel suggestions for many areas of Rome. We are looking at the Hotel San Carlo for another visit as one of our group wants to be closer to the shopping action.

He never picks just one area. Rather, he shows recommendations in several areas, based on what sights or transportation you choose to be near.

You might check your local library. Several times while I’m doing advance planning for a trip and waiting for the newest RS edition to come out I’ve checked out his books at the library.

NP,

The recommended hotels listed in the guidebooks can change from year-to-year, so those in the current book may be different than in the past. However, the hotels mentioned so far should be a safe bet and will give you a good start in researching accommodations in Rome. I prefer to stay close to Termini so usually choose Hotel Sonya or Hotel Aberdeen.

Years ago on an independent trip to Rome I found Hotel Lancelot and we were very happy with the hotel and the location.
(View of the Colosseum. Then Rick started recommending it and on a Rome Tour we were happy to find that we were staying at Hotel Lancelot again! On the South Italy tour we took that started in Rome we stayed with the tour in Trastevere
so you really don't know until you get the tour documents.

If you are traveling independent I would get a map and figure out what you want to see. Find a hotel/B&B according to where you are going to be spending most of your time.

Have a Great Trip!

Thank you for all of your replies. We are a family of five so ideally I would like to stay in an apartment. I was just trying to narrow down desirable areas in terms of walkability for the 'Caesar Shuffle'.

We stayed in the Hotel Aberdeen with a RS tour in 2015. It was the most uncomfortable hotel room/bed I've ever been in/on. Absolutely no charm, no ventilation, and front desk staff wasn't friendly. We could barely find an outlet to recharge devices and keep a light on at the same time. The double room was tiny!
The rooms surrounding the courtyard were noisy all night from the slamming of the large metal gates. I wrote a very negative review on the RS site.
Unless- perhaps there's been some renovation since 2015???

The historic center of Rome is very compact and walkable (about 2.5 miles by 1.5 miles). Our favorite areas where we have stayed are Campo de' Fiori, Monti, Piazza Navona, and Trastevere. Testaccio has its pluses, but that's for your fifth trip to Rome. (^_^)

hey NP
rick stays in different areas of rome with the hotels. what time of the year and dates are you going to rome? don't know the dynamics of your family, but i would look for a 2 bed/2 bath with a sofa bed in living room, if summer time, ask for A/C. don't know where "caeser shuffle" starts or ends. you can check cross-pollinate.com, booking.com with filters you fill in, shortstay-apartment.com. look at pictures closely that bedroom is not a living room, linens included, early checkin okay or can you drop off luggage if arrival is morning time, otherwise pushing luggage over cobblestones, unlevel streets, how many keys, read fine print carefully. hope this helps out.
