Roverto vs. Riva del Garda

I had thought about spending a few days in Riva del Garda and seeing some of the villages and sights around the lake at the upper end of Lake Garda. To get there from Milan or Genoa I can take a train to Roverto and then a bus for 39 minutes to Riva. It might be cheaper to stay in Roverto and just do day trips to things I want to see in the northern part of the lake. Has anyone done this or have any information about travel in that area? Another option is to take a train from Milan to Bresica and then a bus along the western shore of Lake Garda to Riva del Garda. This would afford us a view of the lake and get us into the town of Riva directly. Would appreciate any suggestions.

Well if you have a few days I would take a train from Milano to Desenzano (bottom end of the lake) and then take the ferry up and stay in Riva or Malcesine or Limone. The northern end of the lake is the more scenic and all three of those towns are worth seeing. Staying in one you can get a ferry pass to go back and forth to the others. I stayed in Maclesine and loved it. There is a gondola from the center of the village to a fairly high peak with great views and hiking. Also a nice little castle.

I too would suggest Malcescine, which you can reach by train + ferry as explained above.

Thanks. Yes I was aware of the ferry but it takes longer to get to Riva that way, still a great option. I just thought that Rovereto might be less expensive. It might be too time consuming in the long run.

If you intended to call my name, it is Roberto, with a B not V.
If you intended the name of the town near Riva, it is Rovereto (with an “e” before the t).
Bresica is actually Brescia.

Correct spelling is everything, said the Swedish couple who wanted to go to CAPRI (the famous island near Naples) but incorrectly spelled it in the GPS navigator and ended up in CARPI, near Modena, in the northern region of Emilia Romagna.

Stay in Riva or any town on the north lake. Much nicer than Rovereto.

Yes you can take the bus from Desenzano or Brescia, rather than all around via Rovereto.

Thanks Roberto. I will try to improve my spelling but you did know what I meant. So Riva it is.
