My husband and I are renting a car in Civitavecchia and driving to Vieste to stay for a few days, October 14th - a Monday. We would love recommendations of most interesting/scenic route and perhaps a place to visit to break up the long drive. Thanks in advance!

Hi,
A very scenic but slow diversion would be to drive across the Abruzzo National Park:
- A12-GRA-A24-A25 to Cocullo
- Then south east towards the national park, via SR479 and S83 roads, then S17var to Isernia
- and north east towards the Adriatic highway (A14), via the faster S650 road
- then on to Vieste
One of many options, very twisty though - not recommended if only one driver, as it will take close to 8 hours instead of 6 via the highways.
