round trip transfer from Napoli Central/Sorrento

I will be arriving via train to Naples and heading directly to Sorrento. Is it best to continue via train or take private car to Sorrento? My mother and I will be traveling and I am considering private car for convenience. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Will you have to take a taxi or bus to reach your accom when you get to Sorrento railway station? Depending on where your accom is located and while it may not be cheaper, it can be better value to get a door to door private transfer from Naples because taxis in Sorrento are horribly expensive. We used to use public transport to get to Sorrento but no more. We'd rather start our holiday by settling back into an airconditioned car and letting the driver take the strain!

Elaine, you've left out whether your mother is elderly or frail, and whether you'll have light luggage or big bags. I tell people not to use the word "train" about the Circumvesuviana because although it's a train, it's like a subway or Chicago elevated, but old, crowded, and noisy. No toilets, not operated by the national railway. We had to sit on our luggage in a full car, while accordionists played for Euros. Do you care about that?

It's cheap, safe, and pretty reliable. The car is 100 Euros and takes at least the same amount of time. I would not use a Naples cab, but have your hotel call their limo provider.

The Circumvesuviana is down an escalator in the Naples station, and 150 yards one way. The shiny new toilets are 150 yards the other way, and 1 euro per person.

Agreed that the proximity of your Sorrento hotel to the Circumvesuviana station is one of the important factors. See Rick's hotel recommendations mapped in his book, or see Google Maps.
