I am making my first trip out of the USA. How do I go about getting a flight arriving in Venice but then the flight home departs from Rome.

Go the an airline or Orbitz, expedia, ect website, and look for, and then click on "multiple destinations," and you're on your way!

I am doing just the opposite this spring (into Rome, out of Venice). I happened to find the best rates through Swiss Air. Their website doesn't allow you to search "multi-destination" or "open-jaw" so I had to call them for their rates to do so.

Anne, I'm making the same trip this summer and have been doing the flight research since beginning of December the same way the previous posters have instructed. I haven't seen anything less than $1100 in weeks, and ended up purchasing for $1340 from Chicago to Zurich the Rome to Chicago. This may sound like a lot, but the times and days worked for my situation and are non-stop. Anyway, Swiss does have some of the best rates, and US AIr has been competitive recently as well. United has some pretty fair rates as well. Swiss and United fly through Zurich and Frankfurt which are both easy airports to get around compared to some others.

People will tell you to consider flying into Milan and then take a train to Venice. That is a good way to go because the flights are less expensive BUT you have to take a train or bus to the Milan train station from the airport, then another train to Venice. I'm sure it's not really all that difficult, but you need to consider if you want to do that on your first trip trip to Europe. Remember you will likely be pretty jet lagged.

Have a great time!!

I booked my flight through cheapflight abroad.com and I am flying from FLL to Venice and then from Dublin to FLL for 826 dollars. My flight from Milan to Ireland is 11 Euro ( with extra costs ) about 55 dollars each one way. I have been looking for a flight for a few months and grabbed this one when I saw it. Now it may have been a lot cheaper because I am going in September but as far as I know this is still season.
Good Luck

I'm sorry that web site is (www.flycheapabroad.com )
Also I wanted to tell you the flights are with Delta. As Steve had meantioned before if you Know the Airlines that usually flys into the city at that time it is pretty easy to deduct who you will be flying with. I am so happy with my Delta tickets.

What dates are you going ? And what city do you fly out of ?

Kayak.com is great as it searches the major airlines and expedia, orbitz, travelocity etc

Fares are not coming down greatly this year looks like most are in the $ 1000 range from most cities

Anne,

Check out www.1800flyeurope.com.

I just punched in your destinations with Chicago as your starting point and the costs came back at $748 per person.

I used them for the same trip last year. They're very knowledgeable and pleasant to deal with. Good luck and have fun.

I had been searching for decent fares Nov and Dec on a daily basis. All flights were over 1300. I got lucky in mid January by checking Kayak.com. Was able to book a flight from Newark, NJ to Portugal then continue to Rome (only one hour layover) for $820 Total! Yes, it is not a direct flight, but for this price I went for it. Good luck on your search.

Hey Anne,
I just got back from roughly that same trip (as in, I got back yesterday).

I'd say your best fares will come from chicago (we flew air france from seattle with a change in Paris)... it's very easy, just check the "multiple city" part, and plug in your dates.

We found it on air france, but I think were originally tipped off by checking travelzoo (but go ahead and check a few: orbitz, travelzoo super search, kayak and even www.vayama.com and skyscanner...

good luck and have fun!

Brian: Maybe this should be a separate post but I wanted to ask if you encountered any difficulty @ the airport in Paris for your connecting flight? I have a very short connection time (1.20 mts) from Paris to Seattle.

1 hour 20 minutes? That should be plenty- we had only about one hour and made it... but don't dawdle. It was annoying that we had to get over to 2G (I think) and leave security and then go through security again, once to get to the section, then again (but for us, w/o the metal detectors) to get to the subsection (it was weird that they had a big back-up checking our tickets again just to have access to a section of maybe 6 gates, but maybe they were all bound for the US?)

Anyway, you should have time, just hustle as it's a fair walk.

good luck and have fun!

I can not recommend Hotwire anymore unless you are willing to do the work for the cheaper fares. This is twice now that the airlines had no idea who we were, booked through HotWire, when we showed up at the airports. You don't actually get to pick your seats - even if HotWire said you did. A Ticket Agent even rolled his eyes, at our HotWire reservations.
So I'm assuming there are ongoing problems booking with them and how they update stuff. It worked both times, but only after more intervention than seemed needed and more stress than I wanted to deal with since the cheapest fares are many transfers and sometimes you can be put on standby if you go a discount route.

Is it WORTH $500 in savings, which will pay for three nights in Rome, to wait at an airport for 8 hours or possibly more? You have to ask yourself this and balance it out like in a Spread Sheet.

I'm still an advocate of reserving as early as you possibly can on the airlines, then Book the Hotel Seperately - there are no good deals putting these together. I've always been able to find better ones. Its always better to separate lodging and the Airline. These two things, airline and hotel, are your major costs. Transportation in Italy is very inexpensive compared to Amtrak, and eating well is also very inexpensive if you make your own from the markets.

You are doing this right, flying into Venice and then out of Rome. It doesn't work well the other way cost-wise.
