Rooms in Venice - driving myself crazy!

I have done lots of research and found several rooms that look really nice and in our price range (we are trying to stay in the $250 range) but it seems they are all in Santa Croce with the exception of one. What are opinions of this area? Is this too far away from everything if you want to walk? The places I've narrowed down to are: Hotel Canal Grande, San Cassiano Residenza Ca'Favretto and a B&B called Ca San Giorgio. In Dorsoduro, I looked at Palazzo Guardi and waiting to hear back from La Calcina. Two others I've looked at are Cannaregio - Ai Mori d'Oriente, and Hotel Dei Dragomanni. Any feedback on these particular properties or the area in general would be greatly appreciated...I'm so confused!! HA HA

We stayed in Canarregio on two different trips and liked it. But we like quiet neighborhoods at night. Don't have personal experience with those two properties, but my thought is, nothing is too far away in Venice to walk. We enjoyed walking backstreets (yes, getting lost), but we happened on some areas that we wouldn't have normally seen. Even though you walk a lot, it seems more relaxing, because you're not looking for traffic to cross the streets. Have a great time!

no personal experience with your choices, but we stayed in an apartment very close to Palazzo Guardi and really enjoyed the area. Another choice in the same area would be Pensione Accademia

Which usually gets good reviews.

If you wanted to consider an apartment we have had good luck with www.veniceapartments.org in the past. They usually have things available for as few as 2 or 3 nights.

Venice is a very walkable city, I wouldn't worry about walking to most places of interest from your hotel, whichever one you choose. Walking is one of the pleasures of Venice! I haven't stayed at the places you mentioned so can't offer an opinion on them. Or check the "Venice hotels" or "Venice B&Bs" threads on the helpline for more options?

Have not been to these, but the Campiello is right in the heart of everything. It is not cheap, but has a wonderful buffet breakfast that will last until dinner, has AC and an elevator. They have a Rick Steves' discount if you mention it when booking. When we were ther it was 200 euros.

April - For many years I've stayed at -
http://www.hotelcasanova.it/ My friends Dario, Stefano, and Franco man the front desk and are very helpful. Located directly behind The Piazza san marco and easy walking to The Rialto area and other major sights.

Ciao, Greg

We were in Venice September 2009 and stayed three nights at a lovely place called the Dimora Marciana. It is a new hotel located very close to St. Mark's Square but it was on a quiet side alley. WE paid 150 euro/night. The room was lovely and the breakfast was quite adequate. I would stay there again if I were to return to Venice. You can find out more information about the Dimora on Trip Advisor.
