rooms in the Cinque-terra-not a lot of stairs

hi my wife and i want to stay in Genoa April 30 and May 1st and then go to the Cinque-terra. We arrive in Savona on April 30th. We can stay in the Cinque-Terra for 4 or 5 days and then on to Rome. We are looking for places that are affordable in both places (60E or lower for 2). WE are senior citizens, and cannot do a ton of stairs. Thanks, Bud

Bud, just a hint. Not much to do in Genoa. Unless your are booked, I would head straight for the CT or at least Santa Margherita. Expect stairs in many places to stay in the 5 towns of the CT. You'll see tons of 2-5 level buildings there. Elevators are rare. We've seen posts on this site about the stairs up to very nice rooms with great views.

Also, I recall your messages. You have time to get to Rome. You have the opportunity to get through the CT, tour a bit of Florence and Tuscany and then onto Rome. Just a thought.

Thanks Larry, with May 1 being a national holiday in Italy, what impact should we expect? There is a narrow gauge train that goes north out of Genoa that I found of interest, but have not been able to get additional details on. Otherwise, still looking for places to stay in CT. 10 or 20 stairs would be ok.

Note that to get about anywhere within the towns of CT, you'll be climbing stairs or going up and down hills. That area is not for the faint of heart.

Hi Bud..In Vernazza, There is a wonderful accommodation with an elevator . It is Toninno Basso's rooms at the top of the town.Un fortunately, he is usually booked about 9-12 months in advance. He has 4 rooms, which are quite contemporary, very clean, have a computer in each room, and are air- conditioned. You could try and see if he had a cancellation.

The CT town with the most level streets is Monterosso. It has a variety of hotels, some are equipped with elevators. In most cases you can expect at least one flight of stairs to reach a hotel room. In La Spezia there are elevators at the train station to make changing tracks easier (you have to HOLD DOWN THE BUTTON on the elevator in order to make it work). The towns all have bus service (maybe not Vernazza). Monterosso has taxis and a long promenade along the sea. That is where I stay, at Mueble Agave. I, too, am a "senior citizen" and try to limit stair-climbing. I'd rather save my knees for walking.
