Rooms in Rome

Me and my wife have now confirmed our plans for an upcoming trip to Italy celebrating our 25th anniversary. We are staying 4 nights in and around Florence and 3 nights in Rome. I would like suggestions for comfortable/safe accommodations while in Rome. I have looked at alot of Rick's suggestions in his guidebook and am confused of the many areas to stay in. We would like to be walking distance to most of the big attractions since we only have 3 nights. In one of Rick's shows he mentions a place he likes to stay that starts with a P but no matter how many times I back up the DVR and listen I cannot make out the name. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I think Rick is saying he likes to stay near the Pantheon area. It is a great area to be in and it is near the bus line. It just not near the subway line. But since you only have 3 nights in Rome that is a good place to be. Have a great time!

If you look at a map of the Metro in Rome, you'll see that it's not particularly helpful for a lot of the major sights, so don't feel you have to find a place near it. The historic center of Rome is very compact, being about 2 1/2 miles from Termini on the east side to the Vatican on the west, and about 1 1/2 miles from Piazza del Popolo in the north to the Palatine Hill in the south. The Pantheon is smack dab in the middle of it, so you'll end up walking or taking buses to the major sights.

Have a great time. Rome is amazing.

Use any of the hotels he lists. We always stay in the Termini area for convenience to transit. We use Hotel Sonya or Aberdeen but they are a little on the edge of the major sites but we easily walk to all sites except the Vatican but the bus is easy to catch.

Stay in the historic center!

It's the heart of Rome. It's near everything. You won't regret it.

"P" may mean Prati district, which is near the Vatican. I like to stay there, usually at either Alimandi Tunisi or Alimandi Vaticano hotels. I like the fact that transportation from there to anywhere in Rome is easy via bus and trolly. The neighborhood "behind" these hotels is pretty much all locals, and it's quiet at night. There's a great little family owned restaurant: Piacere Molise on Via Candia.

I recall Rick saying on his video that he likes Trastevere -- and I do too, despite the fact that it has also become very popular with tourists, and you can walk across the bridge to the City Center. You will walk a lot in Rome, and when I'm tired, a taxi is not beneath me!

I am one of those people who do NOT like sleeping near Termini (train station) as it's too far to stop in mid-day for a clothing change, and I find the people milling around at night to appear a little "shakey" even though they may not actually be so. It's my perception. Also after a long day walking and site-seeing, I usually eat near my hotel, and I find the restaurants in that area to be inferior.

One of these days I'm going to venture out of my comfort zone and stay near the Pantheon or Piazza Navona, since I love that particular Piazza and the beautiful fountain. I did stay in Trastevere once, and my husband liked that area best of all. He's not usually with me though, and I feel very safe in the Prati.

Piazza starts with "P" too. There are lots of "piazze" in Rome.
Check the website below. I always found good hotels with it.
On the map you see when you open the site, the Pantheon district and the districts immediately surrounding it collectively constitute the "Centro Storico". That is the most central area. Hotels there are a little pricier, but if you are looking for central, that is it. Once you find something you like check the availability and book a room. The site will redirect you to booking.com for that task.

I love the Piazza Navona/Pantheon/Campo dei Fiori area, and if you can do without an elevator, I like the small Hotel Teatro Pace, just off Piazza Navona. Breakfast is served in your room since there's no room for a dining area. It's on a side street surrounded by restaurants.

There's also an electric mini-bus, #116 (use regular bus ticket or Roma Pass) that makes a circuit of the historic center but goes all the way to the Borghese Gardens and Museum.

Two weeks ago we were in Rome and we stayed in this great hotel very close to Trevi Fountain, "Hotel de Petris" , very inexpensive (64 euros). The rooms were very modern, spacious , clean and the staff couldn't be more friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.
