We are a couple in our 60s, easy travelers going to Italy in May. I have reservations in major cities, but things look expensive in Cinque Terre. I see in Rick's book that there are a number of private room rental services there, but do you think we should make a reservation for a 60-70 Euro per night room before we go or take a chance that we can find a cheaper place when we arrive on a Saturday for 3 nights. What are the average rates for these private rooms?
Bonnie, I'd suggest having a look at These Rooms in Riomaggiore. In my experience, the rooms are very comfortable and the prices reasonable. One point to mention - all of the tabs on the website don't seem to be working at the moment. I was able to get around that to some extent, and found that their prices are in the €60-80 range for a double room. They're listed in the Guidebook if you need more specific information. Note that breakfast is usually not included (but it's not hard to find at Bar Central and the Gelateria next door) and you MUST arrive by 17:00 to check-in, as that's when their office closes. Happy travels!
My husband and I, also in our 60's, will also be in Riomaggiore in May. We have reservations for an apartment with a large terrace overlooking the sea for 60 euro/day for 3 days. We found the apartment online and have booked directly with the owner. We looked extensively online at all the villages and for that time of year, 60 euros for 2 people was a fairly average price. Hope this helps.
Bonnie, when are you going? Offseason you can get a decent, clean room for 70E.
We'll be there from May 21-24
Definitely make a reservation. That's high season in CT.
Thank you Janet - that's what I needed to know.
