I have a 6:30 flight out of Florence and need a room near the airport (Amerigo Vespucci). Are there any reasonabale alternatives to the typical sterile "airport" hotels in the vacinity?
kent is correct
It's like everywhere else: atmospheric hotels with character choose not to locate near airports (and there are reasons for that).
People here usually just stay the last night in the hotel they're already been in, and have the hotel arrange for a taxi to the airport; that early in the morning traffic won't be a problem, and the airport is not that far.
Agree with the others. Our hotel was located near the Ponte Vecchio. They arranged a taxi to take us to the airport in time for our 7am flight. Was quite entertaining, rushing through the nearly-deserted streets in the dark. Our cabbie did stop for red lights, but if you want the Italian driving experience without driving yourself, a cab is a good adventure.
I think it took perhaps 20-25 minutes and cost 20 euro.
As others have said, just plan on staying wherever you are for the other nights and asking your hotel/bnb to arrange for a taxi to pick you up at a certain time. We were staying right by the Duomo. It was only about 15 minutes max to get to the airport on a Saturday morning with a 6:00 pick up. The airport is on the small side.
