I have read Ron in Rome and we thought we would take a chance and visit
the Vatican Museum on a Thursday around 2pm without pre purchased tickets It will be in July when we visit. After reading some of the travellers questions not sure if this is a good idea Maybe Ron in Rome is good for quieter months and not the summer months. I am reading that its always busy in the summer months Maybe I should prepurchase tickets

Sounds like you've answered your own question. I would say pre-purchase for July, I was in Rome the last two years in July and the line was looooong. And it was hot out.
