Rome with kinds

My two kids (age 12 & 14) and I are doing the Rome in 7 days tour this June. I have planned an extra day before the tour, and an extra day after the tour. They each get to decide what we do for one of those days. Does anyone have recommendations that would appeal to them that is not covered by the tour? They are old souls for their age, but I imagine there is only so much art and museums they will be able to handle! Maybe a hike or a quick day trip?

What tour??? Biking riding on the Appian Way? If one of your extra days is a Sunday, that should appeal to them plus one of the catacombs in that area. Perhaps a trip to Ostia Antica -- big outdoor park. Make sure the weather forecast for that day is dry.

Day trip to Orvieto. Walk down the Pozzo di S. Patrizio and take the underground Etruscan tour

Boys or girls?
Is the extra day at front end your arrival day- because that seems a bit unfair to the kid that gets that day- you will probably all be jet lagged ;)

I'm assuming it's the 7 day RS Rome tour- which does include a day in Ostia Antica.

The Capuchin Crypt is creepy cool, don't really need a tour for that easy to do your own.
Castel Sant' Angelo might be interesting but it is just another museum
Gladiator School?

Appian Way bike riding is a really god idea- but only on Sundays. There is also horseback riding there- not sure which days
Pizza making class?
