Shawn, you're going to have to increase your budget or decrease your expectations. As I noted in your Venice posting, you're going to be really restricted in places that are available at this late date. Try those websites I recommended. You're looking at spending at least $120US a night to stay in a halfway decent place. Do you have the Rick Steves Italy book? It will be a big help to you. Good luck.

Shawn, Michael is right. I would try to end a perfect trip with a place near Piazza Navona or the Pantheon or Campo dei Fiori - all have lively evenings/nights. If you can increase your budget, there are 3- and 4-star places that are available. I know that booking.com has last minute deals (even a month or more in advance), and usually reliable reviews by people who've stayed in the hotels. Many people also like the Trastevere area.

Shawn - If you're up for a hostel, I would recommend The Beehive. It was clean, safe, and cool. It was very close to the Termini train station. It might meet your budget requirement. - Sharon

Clarification about the star rating system in Italy. It's NOT an indicator of how nice a hotel is. It's only an indicator of what kind of amenities they offer. You can find outstanding, very nice two star hotels that will never be ranked higher than two stars because they can't add an elevator or put in a parking lot. Or they don't have a front desk that's open 24 hours. That said, for the prices in your budget, Shawn, you're looking at having to share a bathroom down the hall with other guests. And probably staying farther away than you would like from the main sites. Good luck.

Hotel Parlemento may fit your budget. The location is good-short walk to Spanish Steps. The hotel is quiet, has good beds, elevator, and nice breakfast.

150E a night really helps open up some options. Do you have the Rick Steves Italy book yet? It's loaded not only with lodging suggestions but tons more information that you're going to need to know. His books are esp. helpful for people traveling to Europe for the first time. It will be the smartest money you spend on your vacation. Do try to find a place in the historic center, which includes Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Campo de' Fiori and the Forum. At this late date, you should consider looking at booking.com and venere.com after you've plugged in your specific dates. Rank the results in order of guest ratings to make sure you get a good place. (Reviews on those sites can only be done by people who booked thru them and actually stayed at the hotels/B&Bs.)
