Rome: What's the best area to stay in?

We are looking for an area that is safe area (safe to walk around at night). One that is no more than a 15-20 minute walk or so to most sites, and one that has some good local restaurants/trattorias, etc.

Why don't you try the Monti area? Close to Termini Station(but not tooo close), full of historic rome restaurants, and right by the historic center. What is your budget? I hear Hotel Capo D'Africa is quite good, as is Hotel Lancelot. Oh, and Hotel Milton too.

Hi Bob,
We love the campo dei fiori area. You can walk almost anywhere in 15-20 minutes, and there is a taxi stand at Largo Argentina for times when you want to go farther. The area is safe and convenient, and there are lots of places to eat, including buying food at the morning market.

Closer to the city center is more expensive, and you'll find that people on the board have their own particular favorite areas, so you'll have to think about what your priorities are--what sites you most want to be able to walk to? How much you want to spend?

I like picking a potential hotel and then walking through the area with google maps.

Our favorite area to stay is Piazza Navona. Close to everything including the Vatican if you are going there.

My friend and I were in Italy for 6 weeks and two weeks in an apartment in Rome. We stayed in the Testaccio area...non-touristy, very convenient to great restaurants and markets and a few blocks from the bus stops to all the major sites; however, if you want to walk to all the historical places, I would stay in the Campo di Fiori area or the Piazza Navone area. You can walk to quite a few historical places from there and it is very safe plus a myriad of wonderful restaurants.

Remember best is a relative term. For us Termini is the best but it is a little outside of your 15/20 walking range.
