Rome. What neighborhood?

I was thinking of staying in a convenient place.
What do you recommend, Trastevere or Pantheon or any where else you guys suggest?

Thanks,

We loved our stay in the Trastevere neighborhood. We stayed in Apartment 19. Rented via HomeAway.

Monti neighborhood is my favourite. Close to main sights and termini station is about a 5 minute walk (I am a fast walker). But a real neighborhood with a nice ambience and interesting bars and restaurants.

Pantheon in my opinion cannot be beat for convenience (unless you count close to the train station as convenient) You are right in the ancient center and very little car traffic near so great for walking around.
If taking a taxi to/from the airport which is what I would do, then the Pantheon area and nearby (Piazza Navona for example) is best.

Definitely Pantheon area. As another poster said, little traffic and fun to walk everywhere. We walked to Vatican, Colloseo and Borghese. Loved the area.

Have a Great Trip!

I hope you have a good guidebook or two for Rome. (There's a guy named Rick Steves who's pretty good.)

It's the smartest money you will spend on the trip.

Awesome! Which books do you recommend. Also any places you guys have stayed that were awesome?

We stayed near the train station but if we ever go back (I hope we will!), I will look for a place near the Pantheon. I loved that whole area so much. Trastevere was fun too, but not as magical as the Pantheon area (to me). RS' Italy books are all great. Pick the ones that apply best to your trip, we used the Best of Italy bc it had all of our destinations (Rome, CT, Naples and Florence).

We stayed right at the Pantheon, open our windows and there it was. Loved it! We could walk everywhere.

For guidebooks to Rome, well, there's this guy named Rick Steves who writes an excellent Rome travel guide. I also like the DK Eyewitness Travel guides as a supplement to Rick Steves.

I agree with others that the Pantheon area a great choice. Also Campo Fiori and Navona are good locations. There are lots of good restaurant choices that are walkable from these areas.

Trastevere without hesitation.... lot's of dining options, within easy walking distance to everything, easy access to transportation. When we go back we will stay there again... we last rented a very affordable apartment there....it's just a very pleasant area to saty in.

We stayed at Hotel Abruzzi where our room looked onto the Piazza della Rotondo and the Pantheon.
I loved the view and watching all the people sitting around the fountain at all hours of the night.

The people at the hotel were nice. There is a small elevator. There was no breakfast room, they gave us a card every morning to go across the piazza and have a small breakfast at a cafe. Our room was fine, bathroom was small. They have remodeled since we were there, the rooms online look more updated and nicer. I booked directly with them and they responded to emails that's when I asked specifically for a room with Pantheon view and we got it. They arranged for a taxi for us Early the morning we left and it was waiting for us when we went downstairs 5 minutes early. They were very helpful.

On another trip we stayed at Hotel Lancelot, actually stayed there twice. It is close to the Colloseo and I really enjoyed seeing it lit at night when we were out walking after dinner. The staff there is excellent and very helpful. Mrs. Kahn the owner and her daughter gave good restaurant recommendations. Some rooms have a small balcony with views of the Colosseum. They have a great breakfast in a beautiful dining room, they do serve a dinner I think I remember that it's a fixed menu and must make a reservation. Lancelot is much larger and fancier than Hotel Abruzzi, but I wouldn't hesitate to stay in either one again. Lancelot has been used on RS 7 day Rome tours, that's how we stayed there the 2nd time and it's the nicest hotel we have had with RS after 7 tours.

Have a Great Trip!

Albergo del Senato has rooms with a view of the Pantheon. Take a look at their website.

Pantheon, because you can walk over first thing in the morning and see it when it's almost empty.

We just finished a week long stay at an apartment in Campo de Fiori. It was an excellent location. We could walk to just about everything, although we sometimes took the bus to give our legs a break.

The good folks have covered the topic of neighborhood choices. I would like to add that you must choose a place that is QUIET, otherwise it's hard to sleep. Rome roads are busy with tourists + road traffic (esp. scooters), from dawn till the twilight.

Depending on the number of nights in Rome, it's not a bad idea to stay a little further from the center. I was told by my Airbnb host (Roman for generations) last time that they don't hang out in Centro Storico much. The traffic is horrendous and many restaurants only cater to foreign tourists.
