Our flight leaves FCO airport at 6 am on a Friday morning. We will be returning to Rome from Sorrento on Thursday. Should we stay in Rome or at a hotel near the airport given our very early departure (to US via Amsterdam)? Will we be able to get a taxi/shuttle at 3 am?
You'll need to call and arrange for a taxi at that hour of the morning. You might want to consider a private transfer service such as romecabs.com. They can let you know how early you need to leave Rome to get to your flight on time, even in the very early morning. donna
It is an early domestic flight so if you are there by 4.45/5 am you will be in good shape. It will be a 30 min or less cab. Have the hotel call the cab.
Be advised that the Rome/FCO 6:00 departures go to another European city where you'll spend the rest of the morning sitting. Knowing I have to get up so early automatically screws up my sleep, and I need all the rest I can get for the flight home. I try to schedule 10:30 a.m. to noon flights out of Rome directly to the U.S.
And like they said, schedule a pickup by a good Rome taxi service. The trip is easy and quick with little traffic out that early. The airport hotels are really expensive.
I approve your choice of itinerary. Yes your flight is early, but I know you are going to Amsterdam to catch the Delta non stop to Portland Oregon, just minutes from Tigard. Most people don't know that for us in the West Coast it is much faster to fly non stop from Europe to our home airport in the West Coast, than to go through a East Coast Airport like JFK. If you went through the East Coast you could sleep an extra hour, but you would need 5 more hours to get home. Therefore stick with your plan, it's the right choice. For your flight to AMS you need to be at the airport no more than 75 min prior to departure. It's less than 30 min by taxi from city center to FCO, therefore if you leave your hotel 1 hour and 45 min prior to departure, it will be plenty.
